Abstract
This paper presents a
major part of the ancient cultural heritage of the city of Eleusis from the
classical antiquity. Eleusis is located in an area continuously inhabited since
the Neolithic times, 19 km west of Athens, the capital city of Greece. It had
been one of the most important sacred cities of antiquity for more than a
thousand years, famous to the Greco-Roman world for the Eleusinian Mysteries
and their connection with the religious myth of goddess Demeter and her
daughter Persephone. The main site of those rituals was the Sanctuary of
Demeter, which is surrounded nowadays by the modern city of Eleusis.
